South Bend, known for its Studebaker auto heritage, continues rolling along with assorted shopping options. Downtown in recent years has shifted from everyday retailers to include an assortment of chic boutiques, eateries, and such. On Sample Street, South Bend Chocolate Company features fudge, creams, collectibles and gifts. On Technology Drive, Woodwind and Brasswind stakes claim as the world's largest music center, frequently hosting musicians in play. Marking a rebirth of retail on South Bend's south side at U.S. 31 and Ireland Road, the new Erskine Commons, anchored by a Wal-Mart Supercenter and Lowe's, eventually will have 78,000 square feet of shop space.

Also on drawing boards, the northwest section's Portage Prairie, near Adams Road and St. Joseph Valley Parkway, will be a mixed-use development including a hotel, restaurant, and retail park. Now razed, South Bend's Scottsdale Mall had suffered years of decline before arrival of the wrecking ball to make way for Erskine Village, $35-million retail center about a mile east of Erskine Commons, featuring a large strip mall, assorted multi-tenant buildings, and freestanding eateries opening in late 2006. For now, University Park Mall reigns in the South Bend - Mishawaka area, anchored by L.S. Ayres, JCPenney, and Sears, with more than 120 specialty shops including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Cache, and Wet Seal, plus nearly a dozen restaurants.
